Current Research Projects
In Edinburgh at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, in collaboration with the Centre for Reproductive Biology, we have an evolving established multi-disciplinary research group that has developed a track record in research into the late effects of treatment of childhood cancer.
1. Female Studies: 'Sex steroid replacement in young women with premature ovarian failure'.
2. Male Studies: 'Restoration and Protection of spermatogenesis following gonadotoxic treatment for cancer'. Our major objectives are two-fold: to further examine restoration/ protection issues for fertility preservation for young boys treated for cancer and secondly to understand more about testicular maturation, particularly during the pre-pubertal period. Background: Inexplicably, boys treated with some therapies for cancer at age 2-10 years, a time of supposed ‘testicular quiescence’, are at risk of low sperm counts/infertility in adulthood. Conclusions: These findings reinforce the view that the ‘childhood’ testis is not quiescent. This may explain the damaging effects of some cancer therapies on subsequent fertility of boys and raises the issue of protective intervention. The present studies suggest that GnRHa-based intervention might be only partially successful.
3. Bone Studies: 'Short-term growth and biochemical markers in children treated for Leukaemia and Cancer'. Funded by the Jennifer Foundation. 'Investigation of the mechanisms of the human bone cell hyperpolarisation response to cyclical mechanical strain and the effect of methotrexate and other chemotherapy agents on this system'. Funded by the Uyea Trust.
4. Cognitive Ability: 'Apolipoprotein E predicts neurodevelopmental outcome after treatment of childhood cancer'. Funded by the Melville Trust.
